'Meet Haymitch': the first real look at Zada's Quarter Quell

Lionsgate chose the date deliberately: the ‘Meet Haymitch’ featurette dropped on 4 July — Haymitch Abernathy’s birthday, and Reaping Day for the Second Quarter Quell. It’s the first substantial look at Joseph Zada in the role, and it runs the arc in miniature: the literal sunrise on Reaping morning, the Capitol interviews, and our first glimpses inside the arena itself.

Around the footage sit the interviews. Director Francis Lawrence and producer Nina Jacobson talk through building the backstory of a character audiences already think they know; Zada is joined by Elle Fanning, McKenna Grace, Ben Wang and Jesse Plemons from a stacked supporting cast. The framing throughout is exactly what the book demanded — this is the boy before the bottle, and the film knows the audience arrives already grieving for him.

What the featurette confirms for Australian viewers: the tone is closer to Mockingjay’s dread than Songbirds’ opera, the Quarter Quell’s doubled field is shot at genuinely unnerving scale, and Zada holds the camera the way this franchise’s leads need to. November suddenly feels close. The featurette is on Lionsgate’s channels now; the film opens in Australia 19 November.
